Starting from the western side of the mountain, Lemosho offers wide, remote trails through rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts. The extended 8-day itinerary allows for gradual acclimatization, increasing your success rate for reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Hikers are rewarded with spectacular views, diverse flora and fauna, and a truly immersive Kilimanjaro experience.
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Big Tree Camp (2,100 m)
Begin at Londorossi Gate, trekking through dense rainforest alive with birds and monkeys. The moderate 3–4 hour hike leads to Big Tree Camp, set in a tranquil forest clearing. Enjoy your first night surrounded by nature.
Day 2: Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp (3,500 m)
Trek through thick forest into open moorland, witnessing unique flora and panoramic views. Reach Shira 1 Camp, a scenic plateau offering a glimpse of Kilimanjaro’s peaks and the surrounding landscape.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,850 m)
Continue across the Shira Plateau, enjoying wide open vistas and geological formations. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp, where gentle slopes allow your body to acclimatize while taking in the stunning scenery.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (3,950 m)
Descend slightly before ascending the Barranco Valley. Trek through rock formations, cliffs, and valleys, reaching Barranco Camp, an excellent place to rest before tackling higher elevations.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035 m)
Climb the famous Barranco Wall and traverse moorlands and rocky terrain to Karanga Camp, gaining altitude gradually while enjoying spectacular views of the mountain’s eastern face.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Hut (4,700 m)
Ascend through alpine desert landscapes to Barafu Hut, the final camp before summit day. Rest during the day and prepare for the midnight climb to the summit.
Day 7: Summit Day – Barafu Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) and Descent to Mweka Camp (3,100 m)
Start the summit attempt around midnight. Ascend steeply through the Saddle to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), Africa’s highest point. After celebrating your achievement, descend carefully to Mweka Camp for overnight rest.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640 m)
Complete the trek through forest and receive your summit certificate at Mweka Gate. Transfer to your lodge or Arusha to celebrate your successful climb and reflect on an unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
